It’s Time To Check Check Your Child Safety Seat

As the new school year kicks off, it’s the perfect time to check that your child’s car seat is up to keeping them safe.

The right car seat installed correctly reduces the risk of injury in an accident by 82%! Here’s what you need to know:

  • Right Fit – Ensure your child’s car seat or booster is appropriate for their age, height, and weight.
  • Check Installation – Ensure the car seat is correctly installed and refer to the manual.
  • Expiration Date – Car seats do have expiration dates. Double-check to make sure yours is still safe to use.
  • Proper Positioning – The Harness straps should be snug and positioned correctly. For rear-facing seats, the harness should be at or below the shoulders, and for forward-facing seats, at or above the shoulders.
  • Transition Timing – Keep children in rear-facing seats for as long as possible, then transition to a forward-facing seat with a harness, followed by a booster seat.
  • No Second-Hand Seats – Avoid using second-hand car seats unless you know the seat’s history and that it has never been in a crash.
